Opportunities

The mission engagement of Second Baptist Church is far-reaching. Many of our members are leading and involved with local ministry and mission opportunities and many have served throughout our state, our country, and throughout the world. What follows is a listing of areas where the members of Second Baptist are leading, serving, and ministering. Take a few minutes and read through these possibilities for ministry. Also, you may find that an area you are serving in is not represented and we would love to have that information as well.

We are limited many times only by our imagination. Our challenge to each one of our members and attenders is that as members of the body of Christ that we begin to serve where we are, and that we step into the places of opportunity that God allows us to experience.

Builders for Christ

Childcare Learning Center
Since 2001 Second Baptist Church has operated a Childcare Learning Center as a mission and ministry to the community. The Center offers full-time care to children up through pre-K and after-school care up to 12 years of age.

The Childcare Center is in its 24th year of service to our community and is now one of the longest continuous operating Childcare Centers in our community. Kathi Boyette is our Director.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes
FCA focuses on serving local communities around the globe by engaging, equipping and empowering coaches and athletes to unite, inspire and change the world through the gospel.,

The local leader of FCA is Toby Crews, a former basketball coach and teacher, in Ware and Pierce County. Currently, Joey Fitzgerald is connected with the FCA at Ware County Middle and is open to opportunities to share as this ministry works with students.
Gideons
The Gideons International is an Association of Christian business and professional men and their wives dedicated to telling people about Jesus through associating together for service, sharing personal testimony, and by providing Bibles and New Testaments.

Second Baptist Church is grateful to have had many of our members serve as Gideons’ over the years. Currently, Roger Shipman is one of our members serving with the Gideons and would be happy to share with you about ongoing opportunities and needs.
Giving Tree
Christmas is a wonderful time to bless our neighbors and for many years Second Baptist members have helped provide gifts of food, clothing, and toys to families in our community.

Each year various volunteers help identify and seek out our neighbor families who have a need. This mission is in need of volunteers who will work together in helping our community during a time of the year when many are willing to be ministered too.

Kingdom Care
Kingdom Care is a non-profit corporation providing free healthcare to uninsured people who meet eligibility requirements and reside in Ware, Brantley, Pierce, Charlton, Clinch, Atkinson, Bacon, or Wayne counties. Each year a free dental clinic is hosted at Second Baptist where over 100 patients are seen in a 3 day period.

Lisa Mathis is the Director of Kingdom Care and would love to share with you more about this mission and ministry. Volunteers are always needed to keep this busy ministry staffed and multiple skills are needed.

Prayer Walking
Prayer walking is a vital opportunity to minister in our local school system. We have provided snacks for the teachers during an in-service work day and then walked the halls praying for the administration, teachers, support staff, and students.

Teachers and others have used this opportunity to share about personal needs, student needs, and community needs. Clint Bowman is overseeing this ministry and we would love to expand beyond our two current schools; Ruskin Elementary and Waycross Middle, to serve others in our school system.

Rebuilding Together Waycross
Rebuilding Together Waycross provides free assistance to people who own their home but who, because of physical limitation or income, are not able to cover the costs of home repair. Typically individuals or families are low-income and either elderly or disabled. Our goal is to help these homeowners live independently, warm and safe. The selection process takes place locally by our board of directors. Since our inception in 1998, we have revitalized 162 homes and 5 non-profit facilities in Waycross and Ware County. (from Facebook)

Jerry and Leslie Holland have worked with Rebuilding Together for many years and would welcome an opportunity to share ways that others might become involved. Their ‘build’ day is the last Saturday of April.

Operation Christmas Child
In 2017 over 8.8 million shoe boxes were collected in the US to be sent all over the world. Every year, National Collection Week takes place the third week in November when nearly 5,000 drop-off locations are open across the country.

2024 will mark the 10th year of Second Baptist Church serving as a drop-off/collection point for Ware County. After this year our church will have collected over 20,000 boxes for this ministry. Al and Belle Carter oversee this ministry and would be glad to share about the opportunities of collection week as well as the rest of the year and what may be needed.

UPWARD Basketball
Established in 1995, Upward Sports is the world’s largest Christian youth sports provider. Upward Sports is the only organization that offers the 360 Progression™, a uniquely designed total sports experience that adapts and expands as players grow in their personal athletic journeys.

Second Baptist is in its 25th year of providing UPWARD Basketball to our community. Averaging nearly 120 players a year it serves as a great basketball program and a wonderful tool to strengthen and bless families and our community with the love of Christ. Daniel Harding oversees this ministry and is always on the lookout for volunteers to fill many varied roles.
Women on Mission
Women on Mission is an extension of Second Baptist Church’s Women’s Ministry. They serve and minister in a variety of ways; home visits, wig making, doll making, dress making, and many more.

They also serve some of the older ladies of the church yearly with a luncheon. Glenda Bashlor is the Director of the Women’s Ministry and she will gladly share with you about their opportunities to minister to others.
